Apple Cider Vinegar and Your Teeth and Throat: What the Acid Does, and What to Ask First

Quick answer

Apple cider vinegar is an acid, and Glyco Reset adds citric acid on top. Heavy vinegar use has been linked to throat injury, and vinegar tablets have burned the esophagus (MSKCC About Herbs: Apple cider vinegar) (Hill 2005 ACV tablet products). If you have reflux, an ulcer, swallowing trouble, sensitive teeth, crowns or veneers, ask your dentist or doctor before the first dose.

Six names, no amounts; the fruit and sugar photos are illustrations. Two of the six, the vinegar and the citric acid, are acids your teeth will meet.

Is apple cider vinegar bad for your teeth?

It can be, because it is acid, and undiluted acid can wear on enamel. Vinegar gets its bite from acetic acid. Your teeth do not care whether that acid came from a salad dressing or a dropper.

Glyco Reset is liquid drops built on apple cider vinegar, with citric acid named too. Citric acid is the sour note in lemons. It is a safe food additive, used with no limit beyond good manufacturing practice (21 CFR 184.1033 (citric acid)), but it adds to the overall acidity. How acidic one serving is has not been published.

Which Glyco Reset ingredients are acidic?

Two of the six named ingredients are acids, and one is a buffer that takes the edge off. None of them comes with an amount.

The six named Glyco Reset ingredients and what each means for teeth and throat. No amounts are published.

The sugar line raises its own questions for a blood sugar product, covered in our article on sugar in a blood sugar supplement.

Can apple cider vinegar burn your throat?

Yes, in some reported cases. Memorial Sloan Kettering's herb database lists esophageal injury among the case reports after too much vinegar (MSKCC About Herbs: Apple cider vinegar).

Tablets have their own record. After a report of esophageal injury from a vinegar tablet, researchers tested 8 tablet brands. The products varied widely, their labels and doses were inconsistent, and it was doubtful some even held vinegar (Hill 2005 ACV tablet products).

Drops are not tablets

A liquid cannot get stuck in the throat the way a tablet can, which is a fair point in Glyco Reset's favor. It is still acid, though, so a sore throat or a burning feeling after a dose is a reason to stop and call your doctor.

How can you take vinegar drops more gently?

Four habits. None changes the serving; the serving stays whatever your bottle prints.

  1. 01

Ask first if your mouth is fragile

Reflux, an ulcer, sensitive teeth, crowns or veneers: show the bottle to your dentist or doctor before the first dose.

  2. 02

Read the serving on your bottle

No serving size is published online. Use only what your label prints, and never add extra drops for a stronger effect.

  3. 03

Take it with food and water

No timing is published. Many people pair vinegar with a meal and a glass of water rather than taking it alone.

  4. 04

    Rinse, then wait to brush

Swish plain water afterwards. Ask your dentist how long to wait before brushing after anything acidic.

Who should ask a dentist or doctor before taking Glyco Reset?

Think of a 64-year-old retired teacher with nightly heartburn and a new porcelain crown. Acid drops are exactly the kind of thing her dentist would want to hear about first.

  • Acid reflux, heartburn or a stomach ulcer
  • A narrowed esophagus or trouble swallowing
  • Sensitive teeth, thin enamel, crowns, veneers or fresh dental work

One more check: raw, unpasteurized vinegar has been linked to E. coli and Cryptosporidium outbreaks, and whether Glyco Reset's vinegar is pasteurized is not published (MSKCC About Herbs: Apple cider vinegar). Ask the order desk at +1 (302) 200-3480 if that matters to you.

What symptoms mean you should stop?

Stop and call your doctor

Pain when swallowing, a burning chest that will not settle, or new tooth pain after starting drops. If a reaction is serious, stop the product and report it at safetyreporting.hhs.gov (FDA: How to report a supplement problem).

So are vinegar drops safe for your teeth and throat?

A safety review found side effects at usual vinegar amounts seem small (Launholt 2020 ACV safety review). For anyone with reflux, fragile enamel or dental work, the acid is the first thing to ask about. No Supplement Facts panel is published, so check the warnings on your own bottle, and see our Glyco Reset side effects guide for the wider list.

FAQ

Vinegar, teeth and throat: common questions

Is Glyco Reset bad for your teeth?

It can be hard on enamel, because it contains two acids: apple cider vinegar and citric acid. How acidic a serving is has not been published. Take it with food, rinse with water afterwards, and ask your dentist first if you have sensitive teeth or crowns.

Can apple cider vinegar drops cause heartburn?

They might in some people, since vinegar is acidic. Case reports link heavy vinegar use to throat injury. If you have reflux or an ulcer, ask your doctor before trying Glyco Reset, and stop if burning or pain follows a dose.

Should I brush my teeth right after taking apple cider vinegar?

Ask your dentist how long to wait, since advice differs from mouth to mouth. Rinsing with plain water right after any acidic drink is a free habit that needs no special timing, and it suits vinegar drops too.

Are apple cider vinegar tablets safer than drops for your throat?

Not necessarily. A vinegar tablet was tied to a reported throat injury, and a test of 8 tablet brands found inconsistent labels and doses. Liquid drops cannot get stuck the same way, but they are still acid.

Is the vinegar in Glyco Reset pasteurized?

That is not published. Raw, unpasteurized vinegar has been linked to E. coli and Cryptosporidium outbreaks. If it matters for you, for example during pregnancy or with a weak immune system, call the order desk and ask before buying.

Can I take Glyco Reset if I have a crown or veneers?

Ask your dentist first. Your dentist knows how your dental work handles acid. If your dentist agrees, take the serving printed on your bottle with food and rinse with water afterwards.
